Seeking an ultra lightweight towel for backpacking? Are you going to be swimming or doing water sports? Do you simply need a quick drying towel for general outdoor activities? 

The more diverse and specific your needs, the larger the towel you'll want to invest in. Keep in mind that a bigger towel takes up more space in your pack, so consider the purpose carefully before making a decision.

Pack and gear weight

This brings us to our next point. If you're going on a multi-day camping and hiking trip, you'll want to consider the weight and size of your gear. 

Space and weight is at a premium when you’re enjoying Mother Nature, and even a few ounces can make a difference. In this case, a small or medium camping towel may be the best option.

Camping towel budget

Buy a second towel for added versatility. There... we said it! Jokes aside, if you have the budget, it's always nice to have a second towel for backup or to use for different activities.

Quick dry versus cotton towel

When weighing up a camping towel you'll come across two main types of fabric: quick dry microfiber and cotton. 

Quick dry towels are lightweight, compact, super absorbent and fast drying. Cotton towels are heavier, bulkier and take longer to dry (but have a plushier feel). 

A microfiber or quickly drying towel takes up way less space than a traditional cotton towel. In our opinion, the benefits of a quick dry towel outweigh any downside.

Weather and climate

Bringing a packable camping towel will be a top priority if you're doing outdoor activities in wet and humid conditions. 

If you're going on an alpine climbing or kayaking trip, for example, the weather is likely to be damp and chilly so having a towel that can dry quickly will be essential. 

In this scenario, size up and bring a medium or large quick dry towel.

Personal preference

At the end of the day, when you're staring out a range of avant garde towels with cool designs and artwork, size might not matter.

You shouldn't feel guilty about choosing just on looks. It's how my wife chose me (actually... she chose me because I'm tall and rarely late, but meh). Go with your gut.
