What Is an
Oversized Towel?

Large. XL. Extra large. Oversized. Apparently towels needed aliases. Here's what all those words actually mean, what size counts as oversized, and whether you really need six feet of towel.

Six feet of towel means you can actually lie on the thing without deciding which body parts you're willing to donate to the sand.
The Direct Answer

There isn't one official universal size for an oversized towel. If we're talking about full-size beach and outdoor towels, a lot of them land around 30 × 60 inches, which happens to be the size of our Medium towels. Step up to 36 × 72 inches and you're getting into what people commonly call large, XL, extra-large or oversized. That's the size of our Large towels.

More Towel. Pretty Simple.

If You Only Came Here for the Number

Our answer is 36 × 72 inches. It's six feet long, gives you noticeably more room than a 30 × 60 towel, and it's commonly described as oversized, XL or extra large. We just call it Large because towel naming has suffered enough.

What Size Is an Oversized Towel?

There isn't an international towel referee standing next to a ruler deciding when a regular towel officially becomes an oversized towel.

Brands use words like large, XL, extra large and oversized a little differently. That's why the actual measurements matter more than whatever adjective somebody slapped on the package.

If you're talking about full-size beach and outdoor towels, a lot of them land around 30 × 60 inches. That's exactly the size of our Medium towels. It's a proper full-size towel with plenty of room for swimming, showers, travel, pool days, beach days and normal towel behavior.

Our Large towels step up to 36 × 72 inches. That's another six inches of width and a full foot of length. At that point, you're firmly in what plenty of people call oversized, extra-large or XL towel territory.

It's also why you'll see 36 × 72 towels described as oversized beach towels. The beach is one of the places where that extra surface area becomes especially useful, but it isn't the only place.

Happy Faced Size Dimensions How We Think About It Best For Shop
Small 20 × 40 in. Compact utility towel Sweat, dogs, cars, gym bags, sandy feet and little disasters Shop Small
Medium 30 × 60 in. Full-size all-around towel Travel, showers, pool days, camping and everyday use Shop Medium
Large 36 × 72 in. Large / XL / oversized Beach days, lounging, wrapping, surfing and maximum coverage Shop Large

Oversized is a description. The dimensions are the useful part.

Is 36 × 72 Considered an Oversized Towel?

Yep.

A 36 × 72 inch towel is commonly described as large, oversized, XL or extra large.

We call ours Large. It's not because we've taken some philosophical stand against the word oversized. We've already got Small, Medium and Large, and three sizes felt like enough nouns for everybody.

So if Google brought you here because you searched oversized towel, oversized beach towel, extra large towel, extra large beach towel, XL towel or some version of "really big towel," you're looking for what we call our Large.

Happy Faced Large = 36 × 72 inches = six feet of towel.

Oversized Towel vs. Regular Towel

The obvious difference is size.

Outstanding work. We're all learning.

But another six inches of width and twelve inches of length changes the towel more than the numbers make it sound.

A 30 × 60 towel gives you 1,800 square inches of surface area.

A 36 × 72 towel gives you 2,592 square inches.

That's about 44% more towel territory. Which is a pretty big jump for something that's still expected to fit in a bag and dry your ass.

Large / Oversized

You've got more room to stretch out, wrap up, change after a surf, cover a pool chair and generally refuse to be under-toweled.

Neither one's automatically better. It really comes down to whether you want easier packing or considerably more real estate.

This is where the extra surface area starts making sense. More room for you. Less involuntary contact with the beach.

Who Actually Needs an Oversized Towel?

"Need" might be doing some heavy lifting here.

You technically don't need much beyond food, water, shelter and somebody willing to tell you when you've got sunscreen smeared across your entire forehead.

But there are definitely situations where the extra room of an oversized towel makes a lot of sense.

Tall Humans

More Body. More Towel.

A 72-inch towel gives you six feet of length. If you're tall, that's nice when you'd prefer your head and feet to stay on the towel at the same time.

Beach Life

Actually Lying Down

If your towel spends hours underneath you instead of thirty seconds drying you, extra width and length start becoming a lot more important.

Surf

Changing Coverage

More towel gives you more coverage while you're drying off or attempting the ancient parking-lot ritual of changing out of a wetsuit without getting arrested.

Pool

Chair Territory

A bigger towel covers more of a lounge chair and gives you room to stretch out without constantly negotiating with exposed vinyl.

Family

Kids & Chaos

Kids somehow occupy considerably more space than their actual dimensions would suggest. Extra towel territory helps.

Dog Department

Wet Creatures

Dogs respect towel boundaries about as much as they respect personal space. Sometimes more towel is just surrendering to reality.

Lie on it. Wrap up in it. Change underneath it. Share it with a dog that'll immediately ignore every boundary you've established.

Are Oversized Towels Too Bulky?

They can be.

That's where material matters almost as much as size.

Take a really large traditional cotton towel, soak it with water and suddenly you're carrying something that feels less like beach gear and more like a damp emotional burden.

A bigger towel means more fabric. More fabric can mean more weight, more drying time and more bulk if the material itself is heavy.

That's one reason we use lightweight microfiber. Our towels are made from 88% recycled polyester and 12% nylon and they're designed to be quick drying, absorbent, lightweight, compact and sand resistant.

The goal is more towel. Not more wet mattress.

If packability matters more to you than maximum coverage, that's where our Medium towels start looking pretty smart.

It's big enough to earn the oversized label, but it's still built to leave the beach and go do other things.

Oversized Beach Towel vs. Beach Blanket

An oversized beach towel and a beach blanket can overlap, but they don't really have the same job.

A beach blanket's main job is giving you space

You spread it out, sit on it, lie on it, arrange an unreasonable amount of snacks on it and defend it against sand-covered strangers.

A towel still has to towel

It's got to absorb water. Dry your body. Wrap around you. Handle swimming. Survive the trip back to the car. Then dry out so tomorrow doesn't smell like yesterday.

That's where an oversized microfiber beach towel starts making a lot of sense.

You're getting significantly more room than you would with a smaller towel, but you're still carrying something that's actually built to dry you.

If sitting is the whole job, grab a blanket. If water might get involved, you'll probably want a towel.

When an Oversized Towel Is Too Much Towel

This is the part where a towel company tells you not to buy the biggest towel in every possible situation.

Please alert the marketing department.

Bigger isn't automatically better. The right size really depends on what you're doing with it.

Small

20 × 40

It's great for sweat, dogs, cars, gym bags, sandy feet, spills and general everyday nonsense. You don't need six feet of towel to wipe your face.

Medium

What Should You Look for in an Oversized Towel?

Size gets you into oversized territory. It doesn't automatically get you a good towel.

Actual dimensions

Ignore the adjectives for a second and look at the numbers. "Jumbo," "XL," "giant" and "oversized" don't tell you nearly as much as an actual measurement does.

Absorbency

A huge towel that doesn't dry you is basically a disappointing picnic blanket.

Drying speed

More surface area means more wet fabric after you use it, so quick-drying material gets even more useful as the towel gets bigger.

Packability

Ideally, you're getting the extra coverage without needing a separate suitcase just for your towel.

Sand resistance

If you're using your oversized towel at the beach, sand resistance matters too. Sand's great when it's underneath the ocean. It's considerably less charming when it's underneath your fitted sheet.

Something worth looking at

This one's admittedly personal.

But if you're spreading 2,592 square inches of fabric across a beach, pool deck, campground or wherever else, we think it should probably have something better going on than beige.

Happy Faced towels feature original artwork from independent artists. The towel's got a job to do. That doesn't mean it has to dress like it's heading to a corporate retreat.

Oversized Towel FAQs

What size is an oversized towel?
There isn't one universal industry standard. If you're talking about full-size beach and outdoor towels, 30 × 60 inches is a common full-size measurement, while 36 × 72 inches is commonly described as large, XL, extra-large or oversized.
Is a 36 × 72 towel oversized?
Yes. A 36 × 72 inch towel is commonly considered oversized or extra-large compared with a 30 × 60 inch full-size towel. We call our 36 × 72 size Large.
What's the difference between a regular and oversized towel?
The biggest difference is surface area. A 30 × 60 towel gives you 1,800 square inches, while a 36 × 72 towel gives you 2,592 square inches. That's about 44% more room for lounging, wrapping, changing and full-body coverage.
Is an oversized towel the same as an oversized beach towel?
Sometimes. Oversized towel is the broader term. Oversized beach towel usually describes a larger towel meant for swimming, lounging, pool days, surfing and other beach use. Our 36 × 72 Large works for those jobs and plenty of others.
Are oversized towels good for tall people?
Yep. A 72-inch-long towel gives you six feet of length, so taller people get more full-body coverage when they're lying down, drying off or wrapping up.
Are oversized towels too bulky?
They can be if they're made from heavy material. Bigger cotton towels can get bulky and heavy when they're wet. Lightweight quick-dry microfiber gives you more coverage without quite as much baggage, literally.
Is an oversized beach towel better than a beach blanket?
It depends on what you're doing. A beach blanket's mainly for sitting and lounging. An oversized beach towel gives you extra surface area while still being built to absorb water, dry you off and wrap around you.
What size is the Happy Faced oversized towel?
We call ours Large. Happy Faced Large towels measure 36 × 72 inches. Our Medium towels are 30 × 60 inches, and our Small towels are 20 × 40 inches.
Should I buy a Large or Medium towel?
Go Large if you want maximum coverage for beach days, pool lounging, wrapping, changing or just having more room. Go Medium if you want a full-size 30 × 60 towel that's easier to pack for travel, camping, swimming and everyday use.

Go Ahead. Take Up Some Space.

Our Large towels measure 36 × 72 inches. That's six feet of quick-drying, absorbent, sand-resistant, artist-designed towel for beach days, pool days, surf sessions, camping and wherever else more towel sounds like a good idea.
